Project Update - November 2011

The Ambler Mining District Access project team spent the summer doing research on existing information, meeting with local communities in the Upper Kobuk Valley, and completing a preliminary field reconnaissance. The project team has prepared several technical memorandums summarizing existing research on hydrology, soils, wetlands, wildlife habitat and other environmental resources and copies of these reports are posted on the website.

The team also began discussions with some of the many state and federal agencies that would be involved in permitting an access corridor.  A number of fixed-wing and helicopter trips have been completed with project team members – including Community Subsistence Advisors – and some agency representatives to review potential corridor alignments. Particular attention has focused on river crossings and alignments through and along mountainous terrain.  Community Subsistence Advisors have provided valuable input on some sensitive areas to avoid.

The study area for this project is vast and encompasses a variety of terrains and habitats, from coastal wetlands to alpine tundra.  More studies are planned to address community concerns regarding subsistence and other issues.

The project team plans to hold several meetings in communities throughout the region this fall.

Thank you for your interest in the project! Please feel free to send any questions to our project e-mail address ambleraccess@dowlhkm.com.
