Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) residents have long understood that Hatcher Pass has the potential to be developed as a high-quality ski and recreation area for local residents and visitors. Development of ski and recreation facilities at Hatcher Pass could provide a substantial economic development opportunity to the MSB by bringing jobs, a new industry and infrastructure improvements that could help attract other development.
The MSB is now embarking on a campaign to develop the area's great potential for Alpine and Nordic skiing venues and to provide summer hiking, mountain biking, and other recreational opportunities.

The Record of Decision (ROD) has been issued for the Hatcher Pass project.
The ROD signals formal federal approval of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Hatcher Pass Recreational Area Access, Trails, and Transit Facilities Project. The ROD authorizes the MSB and the FTA to proceed with design, land acquisition, and construction based on the availability of funds.
The project is now entering into the design phase.
